SOCIAL TRAP

thread on photographs, 12 x 16.5”

This series looks at social constructs of beauty and how they can corrode self-perception, suppressing uniqueness for conformity. I took stereotypical ‘modelesque’ portraits of my subject, but sewed over much of her distinguishable facial features. The intricate patterns are aesthetically pleasing, yet create webs that bind and imprison my subject; tainting the pretty surface feature with darker connotations. I hope my distortion of the ‘beautiful’ social archetype startles viewers into seeing the unsettling grips of society on self-image.
